Command Sergeant Major
Clarence Curtis Stanfield (April 20, 1931- December 14, 2009) better known as "Stan" departed this worldat 11:35 am December 14, 2009 after a week stay at the VistaCare Hospice located in Wesley Woods Center in Atlanta, GA battling lung cancer.
Stan was a career Army soldier and known as "A soldier's soldier" who retired as a Command Sergeant Major of the Green Beret, he served in 9 countries including the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2nd award), Combat Infantryman Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm, 5 Overseas Service Bars, 8 Service Stripes and the Meritorious Service Medal and was trained in 5 languages.
During his assignment at Camp Zama, Japan he married Reiko Shimizu and had two daughters, Barbara and Jeannie. He was raised in Fairview, AL by Hoyt and Eunice Grimes, (with sister Dorothy and brother Harold) and will be returning to his country home town for burial. Visitation will be held at Welcome Baptist Church from 10 am on Saturday, December 19, 2009 and funeral services will begin at 2:00pm. He is survived by the mother of his children, Reiko, two daughters: Barbara Stanfield Koehler & her husband Dennis; Jean Stanfield Duffy and her husband Jeffrey, four grand-children: Chelsea Stanfield Duffy, Taylor Nicole Stanfield, Jacob Stanfield Koehler and Joe Koehler & his wife, Alicia. He also had two great-granddaughters: Maria and Sophia and
numerous nieces & nephews who were very involved in his life.
We will be forever grateful for love of the Grimes Family who took him in as one of their own. Pastor David Stancil and Harry Grimes will be conducting services.
